Chin & Cheek Implants

Chin and Cheek Implants

Beauty in a face is when all the parts fit together in harmony.    G. McCollough, M.D.

Studies have shown that as humans, we are preconditioned to recognize symmetry, balance, and a rightness of proportion as beautiful. This inherent sense of what is attractive cuts across time and cultures. Humans, even from infancy, will choose what is attractive over the opposite. The principle of facial proportion has been well recognized since the time of Classical Greece.

The face is divided into equal thirds. The distance from the hairline to the brow, from the brow to the base of the nose, and from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin should be the same. In the lower face, the distance from the base of the nose to where the upper and lower lip meets should be 1/3 of the distance from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin. The anterior projection of the chin should be in line with where the front of the lips meets when viewed from the side.

The primary goal of aesthetic facial surgery involves rejuvenation and enhancement. Rejuvenation is reconstruction into a youthful appearance again. Enhancement is making something better, improving or augmenting it. Chin and cheek implants produce the most significant improvements in appearance of any aesthetic facial surgery. Implant surgery is primarily about enhancement rather than rejuvenation. Yet people with strong facial skeletal landmarks endure the aging process more gracefully. Sophia Loren, Joan Collins, Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck all seem to persist in a timeless and ageless fashion.

The best facial cosmetic implants are made of silastic, a cross-linked polymer which is reinforced with silica. It is also known as silicone rubber and has had good long track record in medical applications.

Chin implants

A quick study of universally admired male icons such as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Cary Grant, Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood … reveals that they all share strong chins and square jaws. Supermodels and movie stars such as Julia Roberts, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Naomi Campbell, Catherine Zeta-Jones… all have high cheekbones and straight, well defined jaw lines. Different types of chin implants are designed to enhance the chin and jaw lines in different ways depending on the need. The chin can be projected more forward, more forward and downward, or to correct chins that have become pointy with age. A weak chin can make the nose look bigger. These different implants are made in a variety of sizes so that the surgeon becomes an artist and a sculptor of the facial structure. In general, these implants are placed through a small incision under the chin.

Cheek implants

It has been shown that cheek and chin implants enhance the results of facelift surgery in patients that need them. Cheek implants also come in a variety of types and sizes to suit different purpose. Some implants enhance the cheek bone, some are meant for filling in hollowness in the cheeks, others are used to fill in the midface area below the eyes. All of these implants can be positioned without a visible scar.
