Chin Liposuction
Liposuction is the process of removing subcutaneous fat by applying suction through a blunt canulla. A canulla is essentially a tube with a rounded end. Near the end, there are one or more holes with sharp edges where the fat cells are pulled through, separated and suctioned out. Dr. Jeffrey Klein introduced the extremely wet, or "tumescent" technique for liposuction in 1987. This technique of infiltrating large volumes of lidocaine and epinephrine was an important advance in that it reduced blood loss, improved patient comfort, and decreased recovery time.
ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?
In facial cosmetic surgery, liposuction is commonly performed in the neck and in the jowl to reduce subcutaneous deposits of fat. This is either done as a primary procedure or in conjunction with a face or neck lift. As a rule of thumb, patients age forty or younger may do well with liposuction alone.
Loss of skin elasticity is an indicator that redundant skin folds may be a possibility after liposuction alone. In some cases, a combination with other procedures such as a neck and face lift will yield a more favorable result. Overaggressive liposuction may also cause surface irregularities. There are limits to what liposuction can achieve. Some fat deposits are under the first layer of muscle (platysma) in the neck and have to be removed surgically.
RECOVERY
There will be significant drainage for several days following liposuction. Drains are normally used and are removed after two to three days. Compression dressing is worn for 23 to 24 hours a day for the first seven post operative days. After the first week, patients are instructed to wear the compression dressing for eight to ten hours a day for the following three to four weeks.
If sutures are used to close the incision those are removed in one week. Any bruising should resolve within two weeks. Most patients are able to return to work after one week.
