Restylane

Restylane® Injections

Restylane is another cosmetic filler that has just been approved by the FDA. The difference between Restylane and Radiesse® is that Radiesse® lasts longer (1 year vs 6 months) but on the other hand Restylane can be used to fill fine lines and wrinkles and has a better safety profile in the lips. Restylane is injected into the dermis while Radiesse® is injected under the dermis. Both of these fillers last much longer than the old standard collagen.

Restylane is made of synthetic hyaluronic acid, a polysaccharide (natural sugar) found largely in human skin. Its primary function is to provide volume and pliability to the skin. The unique characteristic of hyaluronic acid is its ability to bind with water molecules. This property makes it ideal as a filler material, for even as it is naturally degraded it continues to attract more water to it. There is no skin test necessary prior to injection. I like Restylane most for the lines radiating from the lips. I prefer Juvederm in the lips because it feels softer and lasts longer than Restylane.

Note prominent wrinkles in the upper lip.
