Dear Peter,
I am glad that spring is finally here. Have you looked at the flowers everywhere?
I made the trek to San Jose to have my surgery. It went well but took a lot longer than expected. More on the surgery follows.
Hope you are all doing well.

My turn.
|
|
After photos done 3 days after surgery
I had this fold of skin covering the outer part of my lids especially on the left side. The results of surgery is subtle but that is exactly what I want. I needed the problem taken care of but I did not want to look different.
I had the surgery on Friday, April 23rd. This is how I looked back at work on Monday. A little make-up covered the slight bruising. I was very diligent with the ice, took Arnica for the bruising and Bromelain for the swelling. Does everyone look this good three days later? No, results as they say may vary but it helps to follow instructions.
Things I learnt as a patient:
- The feeling of loss of control can be overwhelming. I am happy to say that we do everything we can at my practice to minimize that.
- Due to my insurance, I had no choice but to have it done in a hospital setting, which took approximately a total of 5 hours!!. Things are much more streamlined and efficient at Faces!
- Theresa had this bright idea about the ice pack: just cover one eye at a time so I can watch TV with the other.

Over-the-counter Anti-wrinkle Face Serums
|
|
Tests by Consumer Reports show inflated claims and limited results
According to 12,699 Consumer Reports online subscribers who responded to an online survey about aging, nothing betrays a woman's age more than wrinkles. This is why the market overflows with lotions and potions that claim to work magic on your wrinkles - in weeks!
But how well do they really work? Not very, their latest tests show. They bought nine face serums that claim to reduce the appearance of fine lines at drugstores, department stores, and specialty beauty stores such as Sephora or online. The products were DermaSilk 5 Minute Face Lift, Neutrogena Ageless Intensive Deep Wrinkle, Lancome Paris High Resolution Collaser 5X, Vichy Liftactivpro, Perlabella Retinol Face, Philosophy Booster Serum, Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Regenerating, Boots No. 7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty, Burt's Bees Naturally Ageless Intensive Repairing.
After 6 weeks of use, the effectiveness of even the best products were limited. When they saw wrinkle reductions, they were at best slight and fell short of the miracles that manufacturers seem to imply on product labels. The FDA which oversees cosmetic safety and labeling, does not require manufacturers to test for efficacy.
What should you do? Rely on daily use of a good sunblock, consider using products proven to improve the appearance of aging skin such as Retin-A and hydroquinone which is available at Faces!

Neck Lift
|

Neck Lifts are the most challenging procedures I do but they are also the most satisfying. Challenging because I am trying to do so much through such a small incision. My goal is always to thin the neck down if it is bulky with subcutaneous fat, sculpt a nice jaw line and sharpen the angle between the chin and the neck.
Often this involves a combination of subcutaneous liposuction, suturing the platysma (the flat muscle under the skin that forms vertical bands) tight in a corset fashion, and sculpting of the fat layer under the muscle as well. If the skin elasticity is poor, we often remove excess skin as well. This is done by pulling and removing redundant skin upward towards the ears or backwards towards the hairline.

Can you guess what we did on the forehead?
|
|

No we did not give her Botox to the forehead
Obviously the wrinkles on the forehead are much better. What she actually had was an upper lid lift. Before surgery, she was unconsciously using her forehead muscle to lift the eyebrows and eyelid skin up and out of the way. This constant movement resulted in deep forehead lines.
After surgery, the forehead relaxed and the lines improved. This is reason if there were significant eyelid drooping, Botox injection in the forehead will help the forehead lines but may cause symptoms of eyelid heaviness.

Fractional CO2 Skin Resurfacing
CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is the most effective means we have to quickly improve skin texture and color, remove wrinkles, and tighten the skin. Traditional CO2 Resurfacing is done as a single procedure where the top layer of skin is vaporized evenly. Only the face can be treated. New skin heals over in 10 days, during which there is quite a bit of skin care.
To lessen the downtime, we have come up with fractional treatments using the same laser. Fractional CO2 Resurfacing involves applying the laser in a tight grid pattern (also known as microdots) leaving islands of normal untreated skin which speeds up healing considerably. There is some redness and swelling for 2-3 days, then it peels discreetly for a few days. Most patients are able to resume normal activities after 2-3 days. Fractional treatments can be applied to the neck and the decollete area. We estimate that three fractional treatments equals one traditional CO2 in the face.
